A formal theory for reasoning about parthood, connection, and location

چکیده

In fields such as medicine, geography, and mechanics, spatial reasoning involves reasoning about entities that may coincide without overlapping. Some examples are: cavities and invading particles, passageways and valves, geographic regions and tropical storms. The purpose of this paper is to develop a formal theory of spatial relations for domains that include coincident entities. The core of the theory is a clear distinction between mereotopological relations, such as parthood and connection, and relative location relations, such as coincidence. To guide the development of the formal theory, I construct mathematical models in which nontrivial relative location relations are defined.  2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A formal theory for spatial representation and reasoning in biomedical ontologies

OBJECTIVE The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how a formal spatial theory can be used as an important tool for disambiguating the spatial information embodied in biomedical ontologies and for enhancing their automatic reasoning capabilities. METHOD AND MATERIALS This paper presents a formal theory of parthood and location relations among individuals, called Basic Inclusion Theory (B...

On Parts and Holes: The Spatial Structure of the Human Body

Spatial representation and reasoning is a central component of medical informatics. The spatial concepts most often used in medicine are not the quantitative, point-based concepts of classical geometry, but rather qualitative relations among extended objects such as body parts. A mereotopology is a formal theory of qualitative spatial relations, such as parthood and connection. This paper consi...

A theory of granular parthood based on qualitative cardinality and size measures

We present a theory of granular parthood based on qualitative cardinality and size measures. Using standard mereological relations and qualitative, contextdependent relations such as roughly the same size, we define a granular parthood relation and distinguish different ways in which a collection of smaller objects may sum to a larger object. At one extreme, an object x may be a mereological su...

Parthood Simpliciter vs. Temporary Parthood

Starting from the formal characterization of fourdimensionalism (perdurantism) provided by Theodore Sider, I study the interconnections between the theories of parthood simpliciter (classical mereologies) and the theories of temporary parthood (parthood at a time). On the basis of this formal analysis, I propose a definition of temporary parthood in terms of parthood simpliciter that does not c...

The topo-approach to spatial representation and reasoning

Commonsense knowledge about the surrounding physical world and quantitative theories of space, such as metric geometry, can be viewed as two extremes on how human beings relate to space. Qualitative spatial representation and reasoning places itself in between these two approaches. Qualitative spatial reasoning is a set of high-level theories which abstract from the quantitative details and att...
